National Day of Mourning – April 28

Today, April 28th, we honour our Brothers and Sisters who have been killed or suffered an injury in the workplace. 🖤
“On this Workers’ Day of Mourning, let’s remember why it’s so important to stand up for health and safety at work. Let’s use this day to learn more about how we can protect ourselves and our coworkers, and to commit to making our workplaces safer for everyone. By doing this, we honour the memory of the workers we have lost and build a future where everyone comes home from work safe and sound.”

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6th, 1989, a man walked into l’École Polytechnique in Montreal with a gun, murdered 14 women and injured 10 more.

They were targeted because they were women. Today we mourn those who were killed and we stand in solidarity with survivors.

The following statistics were shared by the Durham Region Labour Council:

  • On average, one woman or girl is killed every 48 hours in Canada.
  • Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals face the highest rates of femicide: They make up 16% of femicide victims and 11% of all missing women.
  • Indigenous women are six times more likely to go missing or be murdered than non-Indigenous women.
  • Three in five trans women and girls have experienced intimate-partner violence.

It’s time for Canada to take action and implement international labour convention C190. It’s the first-ever global treaty on violence and harassment in the world of work.

The federal government has told Canadians they will get this done. Write to the Labour Minister and your MP now and let them know we are DONE WAITING.
