Every day, thousands of Whitby residents visit their local public library and make use of a host of resources and services.
But these services are at risk. The mayor has proposed a budget that includes a cut of more than $180,000 to the library’s budget for next year. That’s a three percent cut in addition to cost of inflation.
At a time when our town is rapidly growing, cutting such a vital service doesn’t make sense.
Our libraries provide books and run literacy programs, but they’re so much more than that. They provide programs for children, teens, adults and seniors that connect our communities. The library is where many seniors go for free computer help, and where many residents go to access the internet to communicate with family. It’s a quiet place to study, a safe place to exist and a wonderful place to let our imaginations flow.
The proposed funding cut will mean losing beloved programs, reduced operating hours and fewer staff to help residents.
Send an email to the council and the library board today and help save Whitby’s public libraries.
